Match.com Profiles…What Makes Them So Weird?

July 25, 2013

I really wanted to go on Match.com, but after reading over 100 profiles and checking out 1000 poses, I’m seriously rethinking.

‘Honesty,’ by Billy Joel, gets my vote for the song that could be the anthem for Match.com.

Honesty is such a lonely word,
everyone is so untrue.
Honesty is hardly ever heard,
and mostly what I need from you.

Turn-Offs

    • Usernames – try to come up with something honest, not weird.

(wantunow, suzysgranny, dirtydog2… are not appealing)

Sometimes, the more clever you try to be, the weirder it gets.   As in texting and emailing, words take on different meanings when tone and inflection are missing.

    • Self-descriptions -When describing yourself try to be humble. Things like “I have been blessed with good looks” is not humble.
    • Photos
      1. Keep current – if you are over 50 your high school yearbook photo is not
        considered current.
      2. Leave out pictures of scenery.
      3. Pictures of animals?…we’re not dating your dog…besides that picture of you lying down beside your dog is weird.  We can discuss how much you love your goldfish
        at a later date too.
      4. Avoid provocative poses…why would you post a photo lying on a bed with your ankles crossed (trust me…you do not look like Gidget).
    • Don’t lie about your age.  Why would you want to start a relationship with a lie?  It’s better to be a fabulous 58 year old than an average 48 year old.  They can google you anyway …the gigs up!
    • Try not to describe yourself in relationship to others.  Such as…I raised two great kids and have 8 grandchildren and they are my whole life.  The other person may feel like you do not have room left for anyone else in your life.
    • Always write in a positive tone.  Avoid negative or harsh comments such as:  “If you’re looking for…. don’t bother contacting me.  Does not sound warm and fuzzy.

Warning!!  Emailing a potential date may bring a false sense of closeness.

Remember that you have just listed of all the qualities you are looking for. There are a lot of players looking only for a hook-up and who will just feed off of everything you wrote.

I’ve been told that some men have joked… ‘after ten emails they’ll be taking their clothes off in the car.’   Let’s pray they’re wrong!!!

In spite of all the strange profiles, many people have successfully scanned the Match.com profiles and found their true love and have married.  There are some wonderful people on Match.com.  I attended a beautiful wedding and can prove it.

Maybe the next one will be yours?
