10 Things Women Should Do On A First Date

June 14, 2013

Being prepared for that first date can be a little intimidating, but with a little thought and preparation, you will be more than ready.  Always be yourself.  One of my favorite quotes :”Don’t change so people will like you, Be yourself and the right people will love the real you.”

Think of what kind of man you really want to spend your time with.  The things that you value and are looking for in a man.  Don’t settle for less than what you need.  You will end up unhappy and wanting “out” of the relationship anyway.

  1. Always take your own car on the first date and meet there.  For several obvious reasons, the first being that you should never get in a car with a stranger.  You told your kids that, right?  Follow your own advice.   Secondly, you may need to exit quickly.
  2. Offer to split the bill.  This will show him that you are not looking for someone to take care of you.  If he insists on paying, you just may have a “keeper.”
  3. Keep the list of expectations at home.  A friend of mine told me one woman showed up with a list a mile long and went on about “I don’t have sex on the first date”… etc.  This man was ready to run after 5 minutes.  He wanted coffee, and she was talking about sex.
  4. Dress smartly, not overly sexy.  There is no need for plunging necklines, excessive cleavage, or skin tight jeans.  Leave the “hoochie mama” at home. Besides, what kind of man are you looking to attract? Whatever you look like you’re selling, that’s all he’s going to be interested in buying.
  5. Be a good listener.  Ask questions about his likes. Sports fan? Taste in Music?  Favorite Movies? Books? Restaurants?  You will quickly find out if you two are a good match.
  6. Keep a warm smile going.  I read that a woman’s smile melts a man’s heart.   It makes him more at ease.
  7. Remember conversation is dialogue between two people.  If you notice yours is sounding like a Mexican song, “I,I,I,I” take a breath and let him speak.
  8. Think like a French woman… lipstick and mascara.  Keep the makeup as  natural as possible.  Especially if it’s coffee in the morning.
  9. If you meet for drinks only, have two maximum and leave alone.  You want him to  know this is how you operate.  You are a quality woman.  And smart!  You demand respect.
  10. Pay attention to how he treats the waitstaff and people around him in public.  You learn so much about a person observing the way he interacts with people.

You’ll know when you leave if either one is interested in a second date. And, it’s ok if you’re not interested.

It’s like a company looking for a person to fill a position.   It would be so much easier to hire the first person.  But, some people only have a few of the skills you require.  You end up choosing the candidate with the most important skills and qualities who best fits your company.

Dating is a similar process, and by dating several people you begin to figure out what qualities most attract you to a person and who fits best in your life.

In the end, the thing that matters most is that you enjoy each other, laugh a lot, and are positive.
